Fall 2011 Registration is Now Closed (except for Pre-K, K and High School)

The registration window for the fall 2011 season closed on June 1, 2011. If you missed the deadline, you can add your name to our waiting list, but please note that all registrations for grades 1-8 received after June 1, 2011 are subject to a late fee and are not guaranteed placement. Click Here to access our registration system.

Registration does remain open for a few of our programs. KickStart, Micro (kindergarten) in the fall only, and the High School Coed program are the only age groups that can still register after the deadline without a late fee and are guaranteed placement.

FAQs regarding Travel Team Formation / Evaluations

We have received a number of questions over the past few weeks regarding the formation of travel teams and, specifically, whether “independent” assessments/evaluations will be used. Below are some answers to the most common questions. Any additional questions can be sent to hopkinton.soccer@comcast.net.

What is the travel program? How is it different from the “in-town” program?
Starting in 4th grade, Hopkinton Youth Soccer registers its teams to play in the Boston Area Youth Soccer (BAYS) league. BAYS teams play by gender in “skill-based” division against other town teams in eastern Massachusetts of similar skill. This requires that we form teams of similarly skilled players, which differs from tne “mixed skill” teams used during 2nd and 3rd grade. Additional information on the travel program can be found at: Info on Travel Program

Will Hopkinton be conducting evaluations/tryouts to form fall 2011 travel teams?
No, unlike prior years, Hopkinton Youth Soccer will not be hosting “independent” evaluations this spring. Teams will be formed based on feedback from the coaches, assistant coaches, and age group coordinators involved in each age group. Most of these people have been working with players in the age group for several years and have an appreciation for the talents of our players. Coaches and assistant coaches meet in person at the end of the most recently completed season to openly discuss team formation and player placement. We are confident that each player will be evaluated fairly by those in attendance at the meetings.

Why aren’t the evaluations being conducted this spring?
The organization of the evaluations process takes a great deal of time and energy each year, including the recruiting of volunteers to organize each session and the sourcing of coaches (paid or volunteer) to evaluate and rate players. Last year, we reviewed how the independent data factored into the team formation process and found that it was inconsistently used across age groups. We also reached out to other programs to determine “best practices” and found there are many different opinions on the best way to structure the evaluation process (i.e., station-based, game-based, performance based, etc.).

After reviewing these findings, we were left with two choices: (a) offer evaluations in a format similar to prior season knowing that the results might not be consistently used, bringing into question whether it was a good use of time for volunteers, parents, and/or players, or (b) skip evaluations this season so as to invest more time in other areas of the program AND to provide us more time to develop a system that WILL bring about consistent adoption. After much discussion, we decided to skip evaluation for the fall 2011 season, instead relying exclusively on coach/assistant coach evaluations. This is not all that different from prior years, where coach/assistant coach rating were the predominant driver of player placement.

Will evaluations be held in the future?
Yes. We have already discussing the best way to handle team formation and hope to introduce some of the changes during the fall season, when most of our players are active in the program. We would welcome feedback/help from a limited number of committed parents/coaches interested in improving this process. If you would like to volunteer, please contact hopkinton.soccer@comcast.net.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to evolve and improve our program. Thank you for your continued support of Hopkinton Youth Soccer!
